Patchouli essential oil is extracted from the Pogostemon cablin plant of the mint family and carries a rich, musky-sweet, spicy aroma. The plant is native to Malaysia and India, where it is known as "puchaput." The word patchouli comes from the Tamil "pachchaiilai," meaning simply "green leaf." The oil is extracted from young leaves, which are dried and fermented before steam distillation — a process that enhances its fragrance and potency with age. It is especially valued in skincare for its scar-healing properties.
In eastern countries, patchouli oil has long been used in potpourris and sachets placed between linen and clothing to impart fragrance while keeping bedbugs and insects at bay. The oil is said to have a balancing effect on the emotions and to create an amorous atmosphere. When diffused in an oil burner, it helps ease anxiety and depression. Added to bath water, it is believed to benefit the skin and scalp, soothe fungal infections, reduce fluid retention, help break down cellulite, and ease constipation.
Patchouli oil also boasts excellent tissue-regenerating properties. It speeds up healing and fights infections, making it useful for acne, eczema, weeping sores, ulcers, and athlete's foot.
In Europe and America, patchouli oil and incense became hugely popular in the 1960s and 70s among the hippies, as its earthy scent masked body odour and the smell of burnt cannabis. Patchouli was also used as a hair conditioner for dreadlocks. In many Asian countries, it serves as an antidote to snakebite.
