A Brief History

The lemon plant is native to India and possibly China, and was brought to Europe by the Crusaders in the Middle Ages. Because the fruit is rich in vitamins A, B, and C, an ounce a day was once given to sailors to prevent scurvy, eye problems, and other vitamin deficiencies. The first real lemon cultivation in Europe began in Genoa in the mid-fifteenth century. It was later introduced to America by Christopher Columbus, and Spanish conquests helped spread lemon seeds even farther afield. Originally prized mainly as an ornament and a medicine, it was only much later that lemon began to find its way into the kitchen.
