Properties & Benefits

Renowned for its ability to balance and uplift, geranium essential oil works on both mind and body. It helps balance oily and dry skin while bringing emotional equilibrium, easing stress and anxiety along the way. Said to act on the adrenal cortex, the oil has a balancing influence on the hormone system and has traditionally been used to support a wide range of concerns.

  • Acne, bruises, burns, and cuts
  • Dermatitis, eczema, haemorrhoids, and ringworm
  • Ulcers, breast engorgement, and oedema
  • Poor circulation, sore throat, and tonsillitis
  • PMS, menopausal discomfort, stress, and neuralgia

Its strong scent also repels mosquitoes, and a few drops added to shampoo can help clear head lice.

Origin & History

These geraniums were once believed to keep away spirits (much as they keep away mosquitoes!), so they were planted around houses as protective hedges. The plants originated from South Africa, Réunion, Madagascar, Egypt, and Morocco, and were introduced to European countries in the 17th century. Although there are around 700 varieties of the plant, only about 10 supply essential oil in viable quantities. The varieties typically planted in gardens produce too little oil for extraction.
