Distilled from the sweet, aromatic seeds of the fennel plant, this essential oil has been treasured for centuries for its soothing and restorative qualities.

  • Latin Name: Foeniculum vulgare
  • Part of Plant Used: Crushed seeds
  • Source: Ukraine
  • Extraction Method: Steam distillation

Fennel essential oil is extracted from the plant Foeniculum vulgare var. dulce, also known as sweet fennel or Roman fennel. Steam-distilled from the crushed seeds, the oil shares many of the digestive benefits of the seeds themselves, along with a wide range of other therapeutic uses. In aromatherapy, it is valued for treating oily skin, wrinkles, and obesity, and is said to boost courage, resolve, and strength.

This oil is a popular remedy for digestive issues such as flatulence, constipation, colic, nausea, vomiting, anorexia, and dyspepsia. It may also support weight loss by promoting a feeling of fullness, while its diuretic effect is believed to help disperse cellulite. Fennel oil is thought to tone the spleen and liver, and it offers a cleansing, toning effect on the skin — even helping with bruises. Please note: this oil should not be used in large doses and should be avoided altogether during pregnancy, lactation, and by those with breast cancer or epilepsy.

The word "fennel" comes from the Latin "foenum," meaning "hay." In medieval times, it was known as "Fenkle." The herb was popular among the ancient Chinese, Egyptians, and Romans, who believed fennel promoted a longer life and improved courage and strength. It was also thought to ward off evil spirits, strengthen eyesight, cure snakebites, and ease colic. In India, plain, roasted, or mint-coated fennel seeds, called "saunf," are often served after meals to aid digestion.
