Gold tooling
Share
We occasionally offer unique and exceptional items for sale. Our non-European customer recently purchased an antique gold tooling set for bookbinding.
Gold tooling is a traditional technique used to embellish book covers. It involves applying gold leaf or gold foil to create intricate designs, patterns, or lettering on the cover. The process typically includes heating the gold leaf and pressing it onto the leather or other material.

Gold leaf is extremely thin sheets of gold that are applied to the book cover. It is delicate and requires skill to handle. Bookbinders use special tools to transfer the gold leaf onto the surface.
Typical bookbinding tooling are:
Agate Burnishers used to burnish the gold leaf after application, ensuring a smooth and polished finish.
Gilder’s Tip (Gold Lifter) for handling gold leaf sheets and gilding knife.
Fillets for run-up of gilt back.
